After that, he took over as head coach at Wayne State College, a Division II school, where he spent six seasons with a record of 116 victories and 53 defeats.
McDermott took over as North Dakota State’s head coach in April 2000. He was in charge there for one season, ending with a 15–11 record. After that, in 2001, he relocated to Northern Iowa, his alma university, where he served as head coach for five seasons, compiling a 90–63 record. During this time, Northern Iowa participated in the 2004, 2005, and 2006 NCAA Tournaments in addition to winning the Missouri Valley Conference championship in 2004.
